why mutual aid?
Mutual aid is US coming together as a community to make sure each others needs are met where our current systems have failed to do so. Unlike charity, it understands this work to be mutually beneficial, not paternalistic. And that’s really transformative because it threatens oppressive systems by both demonstrating where they are failing people, and rendering them obsolete by meeting community needs with community-led systems of equitable organization and care. All while creating solidarity and connection between people from all walks of life. Best of all, this happens in real time, with what we have at our disposal right now…no waiting (how cool is that?). This has become the focus of my activism personally, and takes up most of my days not at work in the salon, so mutual aid efforts have a special place in my heart. Thank you so much to everyone who organizes and participates in them, particularly People’s Pantry, Future City Pantry, and Hunger Action LA, who started it all for me.
“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” - Lila Watson and aboriginal activists, 1970’s.
In that spirit, let’s do it together. Love you guys.

I’ve also compiled a list of some amazing social justice organizations to consider directing your time or funds to. There are also links to books/podcasts that have personally impacted me, and awesome local small businesses to support. I’d love for this link to evolve and change. I view it as a community effort, so please feel free to let me know if there is there is an organization, book, podcast, business, etc. that has resonated with you!
